Neither Maggie or I were huge fans of Vienna during our previous Central Europe travels. So when we found ourselves flying to the Austrian capital after exploring Cyprus for over a week, we were on the lookout for other cities we could visit. As we’ve both always been a fan of ‘second cities’ such as Plovdiv in Bulgaria, Tartu in Estonia & Kutaisi in Georgia, we decided to travel from Vienna to Graz and explore the second-largest city in Austria.
If you’re planning to travel this route in the near future, here’s everything you need to know about going from Vienna to Graz.
How to Travel from Vienna to Graz
There are three main options when travelling between Vienna to Graz: train, bus, car.
Vienna to Graz Train
Taking the train is by far the most comfortable and efficient way to travel from Vienna to Graz. There are frequent trains that depart from Vienna Central Station, usually at least one per hour though for parts of the day there can be 2 trains within an hour. The journey time between the two cities varies between 2.5 to 3 hours depending on which train you take.
If you’re not familiar with booking train transport in Europe, it’s imperative to book tickets in advance, particularly in Western & Central Europe, if you want to secure a good price. The prices steadily increase the closer you get to departure and if you wait until a few days before leaving, you’re unlikely to be able to secure a good fare. Click here to browse train schedules.
The scenery on the Vienna to Graz train is absolutely stunning as you pass vineyards and mountains and depending on the time of year you travel, you’ll be treated to either lush greeny or snowy villages.
